Gypsy Jazz: Rhythm Future Quartet
Some subgenres are magical, almost forcing you to go down the rabbit hole, to experience and soak up the ambience. I can smell the cheap booze, and the stale cigarette smoke.
I have many memories of my father, but one that still deeply affects me is his love of gypsy jazz. He bought me several albums and CD’s over the years of the New Orleans “Hot Club” style in the image of the original Hot Club de France.
Usually it is just strings and sometimes a piano tossed in, but at its core it is a standing bass, a guitar or two, and a fiddle. The songs are often traditional, but each group has their own embellishments, keeping it lively and interesting for the patrons.
My dad would make the trek to the local jazz festivals and hunt down this specific genre, often buying their merch to share with me.
I still cherish my Mimi Blaise, Hot Club of San Francisco, and some LP’s that are lost to the echoes of time.
This morning in my traipse through the Youtube algorithms, I stumbled on this tasty quartet. Fun, funky, and they really groove.
Get out your zoot suit and join me for this enjoyable spin!
I hope you enjoyed that, I sure did.
Well, that was fun! Thank you! 💖
There’s a great group called Squirrel Nut Zippers I heard years ago that had a similar sound. I’m sure you’ve probably heard them.
