More Quake goodness
Throwback time, the game that changed my life in the mid 1990's has been updated to work on modern gear, and it still is a ton of fun.
I "bought" the 25th anniversary re-release of Quake. You know, the game that truly kicked off the 3D shooter genre.
It played very well on my Xbox One, and it plays better on my PC. Since I bought it, there have been a few "updates" that have been pushed, and in general they have improved the game in very slight ways.
To me, it didn't matter, it was - and is - still a throwback to my youth and innocence. The first time you encounter a Shambler you were like "what the **FUCK** is that?" and when the Vor graces your screen? Holleeeeeee sheeeeeeeeeit, that is fucking InSaNe.
On my current PC, an Intel NUC Ghost Canyon with an Intel 8 core i9 CPU, and an Nvidia GTX 1660 GPU (not the greatest, but it fits and it was sorta affordable), it plays great. But I had it set to HD resolution, a.k.a. 1920x1080 on my 2K screen (2560x1440 native resolution). Didn't bother me one iota.
Then, this recent update came out, and it defaulted to 4K. Well, I do not have a 4K screen, so I fumble around and reset the resolution to 2K, and I'll be damned if it didn't just work, and do it pegged at 60Hz refresh rate.
Son of a bitch, I was playing through the Dimensions of the Machines mod pack, and my God, it is wonderful.
There are some weirdnesses, the menus are just plain text, and that takes some getting used to (I presume that the stylized fonts didn't scale well to the up resolution, so they probably compromised. I don't care)
But otherwise, two thumbs up all the way!
