Music: Technical Difficulties
Welcome back Unlucky Morpheus for a reprise of a Racer X standard.
I have a confession to make. I am a guitar player. That means that I am always looking for more music to listen to and learn from.
One of my all-time favorite players is Paul Gilbert. I have written about him a couple of times, and reference him as a measure in many more.
Here’s one:
Anyhow, his history is that he grew up in Pittsburgh, and he has always been a wild player. At a very young age, he sent a sample tape to Ozzy, and that led to him hitting the awareness of Mike Varney of Shrapnel Records, a legendary producer of 80’s metal gods.
His band, Racer X, (really, his first solo effort that has been reconstituted a few times) recorded some truly amazing songs. Scarified is one that is most well known, but another track from the early Racer X stands out. Technical Difficulties is a tour de force of in-your-face riffs, and brain melting lead lines.
The original is amazing, and there have been a slew of covers by a lot of great guitarists. For an up and coming shred-meister, this is one of the standards that they learn and perfect (like in my early days, the Ozzy tune S.A.T.O. was a bellwether to learn).
But, I have never seen a violin cover of it.
Today, I welcome back a recent find, Unluck Morpheus, who has of course covered this — brilliantly.
Did you enjoy that? I sure did.
The original:
The man himself!
Of course, I did mention Scarified, so, here’s a version from a recording session for the Spaceship One sessions, with astronaut uniforms and all:
A triple dose of PG awesome. Perfect Friday!
Thanks as always for a different look at a great “guitar” solo. I like it far more than expected! She def brings it!!
I must say Paul Gilbert is much easier and better to listen to and actually hear. The violinist and her band are too much for my very sensitive ears. I wonder if Yngwie has seen them. I loved Racer X. Cannot remember where I saw them through the haze of all those years in San Francisco and Marin, but I also got to hang out with Mike Varney a couple of times. So many guitarists he introduced. Including Yngwie. What a life it was
