Some audible bliss: Malmsteen circa 1984
Since I would be suicidal if I read the news today in the wake of the homeless abortion that is the shit-take the SCOTUS vomited out yesterday evening, I am turning to YouTube for some diversion, and this video of the pre-solo band of Yngwie Malmsteen — Swedish guitar phenom — when he was the axe slinger of Alcatrazz, the brainchild of Graham Bonnet.
Here he is in Japan, and playing one of his instrumentals, Evil Eye that we first saw a studio recording of on the first Malmsteen’s Rising Force album. Songs like this were what turned me on to the nascent shred guitar scene.
This vintage Malmsteen was from when he gave a damn about playing solid rhythms rather than just his million notes per second masturbation (don’t get me wrong, I like the balls to the wall shred, but I also like catchy tunes and melodies/motifs that weave a tapestry of sound).
