Steve Lukather
Known for his work in Toto, a perennial Yacht Rock band, he is a guitarists guitarist
Steve Lukather is not a household name. But he has had an extensive career as a studio musician, and with the band Toto where he was an anchor of their sound and their soul.
He has played on many albums from artists you will have heard of, including Aretha Franklin, Olivia Netwon-John, Earth Wind & Fire, Lionel Richie, Richard Marx, Michael Jackson, and even Warren Zevon.
Like many (most) studio players, he is a musical chameleon, able to adjust and adapt his sound to fit in the space made. It is (was) a job, and he did it well.
But whether you are a fan of Toto or not, Steve is iconic. For the compilation “This is Guitar Gods” he laid down a rendition of Pink Floyd’s “Shine on You Crazy Diamond” that is just chilling. Not content to just clone the inimitable David Gilmour’s sound and style, he makes it his own, whilst hewing to the original. A thoroughly modern take on a classic. Enjoy!

May he get a well-deserved sweaty bounce. Studio musician has to be a really hard position.
Great post Geoff. He’s truly a monster player. Check out the you tube video of him with Jeff Beck! 😎
