The Never Trumper's Great White Hope Disappoints, again
An early contender, and consistent disappointment to the Never Trump cadre, he shows his true colors, and they aren't pretty
I used to sub to The Bulwark, and follow a few other center-right “never trump” former Republicans, and the one thing they LOVED to speculate about was how other “normie” republicans would surely find the Trump shenanigans distasteful and repugnant, and ultimately disavow Trump, and the whole MAGA madness.
And one by one, these old-guard, normie R’s have disappointed.
One of their favorites is New Hampshire Governor, Chris Sununu, a member of an old-guard stalwart Republican family who has been at the apex of state politics for literally decades. He started off declaring that there was no way Trump would be the nominee, and then he hedged, and now, he has said that Trump will have his full support in the Fall.
As reported in the NY Times, he has redoubled his support, and endorsement, because he and “51%” of the country want to have a sea-change from the “disaster” of Biden.
Hell, as much as I think George Stephanopolous is a pathetic interviewer, he does keep digging, and Sununu failed to cover himself in glory:
Mr. Sununu said that Americans’ desire for “culture change,” a phrase he used eight times but did not concretely define, outweighed concerns about Mr. Trump’s efforts to overturn the election or the four criminal trials he faces, the first of which begins this week.
While Mr. Trump as the Republican nominee wasn’t what he wanted, “we’ll take it if we have to,” Mr. Sununu said. “That’s how badly America wants a culture change.”
Mr. Stephanopoulos pushed back once more.
“So just to sum up, you would support him for president even if he was convicted in classified documents,” he said. “You support him for president even though you believe he contributed to an insurrection. You support him for president even though you believe he’s lying about the last election. You’d support him for president even if he’s convicted in the Manhattan case. I just want to say, the answer to that is yes, correct?”
“Yeah,” Mr. Sununu said. “Me and 51 percent of America.”
For the record, Trump has NEVER gotten 50% of the votes, and in 2024, he will again not cross the 50% threshold. No, if it wasn’t for the Electoral College, a sop tossed to the slave states to get their agreement on the constitution, but as a mechanism that enhances the power of the sparsely populated states that lean rural.
No, Chris Sununu is a shitbird, he is a liar, and he is a piss poor human being. Human Garbage.
Final Notes
I know earlier this week I mentioned that my life at work was getting busy, and my posting would become more sporadic.
Alas, that was before a bumper crop of fuckery happened. I just can’t look away from this clown car.
I mean today, three posts, and it is barely 1:00PM.
I listen to a few podcasts run by former Republicans, and though they're very smart people, I recognized what a train wreck the GOP was becoming WAY sooner than they did. How could anyone live through Newt Gingrich, for example, and think all was well with that party?
I’d love to know where Sununu got his stats. Trump’s disapproval ratings seem to run between 53%-68%. That doesn’t add up to 51% of the country wanting a second Trump term.
