Travel Log: Day 4 - Turkey Day Eve
It was a less stressful day, some visiting, and a bit of family bonding.
On Wednesday, I had a much more sedate day. I visited my stepmother. After my father passed away last year, she decided to sell their condo on Point Loma (San Diego), and she found an apartment in a retirement community. The place is just gorgeous.
I just grabbed a snap of one of the amenities on offer. There is also shuffleboard, Pickle Ball, horse shoe pits, and other activities.
She has found a group of quilters, and is well engaged with the community.
I feel a lot better for her, I will admit that I worried after my father passed she would shrink, and she probably would have had she stayed in the condo.
A good thing.
We hung out for several hours, had lunch in their cantina, and I got a good tour of all the things on offer.
What I am not thrilled about is that she still drives. She was always a mediocre driver (she grew up in the Ellay area, so that instills a cut and thrust aggressive driving style that leads to a white knuckle ride) and I look forward to when she decides to hand in the keys. The good news is I think she is getting close to that.
Later in the day, I headed back to the Hotel to grab a quick nap, and then I headed over to have dinner with my brother and his family and friends.
Throughout the day my sister, her husband and their Keeshond - “Bear” - were texting about their glacial progress of driving down from Solvang to San Diego. What should have taken less than 5 hours stretched to over eight. Yikes.
This morning, we will hook up for breakfast, and then plan on when to assemble. Dinner is typical four our family. We all abhor the “bird” so slow smoked pork spare ribs, and plenty of fixings will be on the menu.
Yum.
However you celebrate, enjoy the holiday, and give thanks!
My brother is doing the ribs, but I usually go simple. Kosher salt, black pepper, cumin, garlic powder, paprika, and enough cayenne to give it a kick
Happy Thanksgiving, Geoff! What seasonings (if any) does your fam use on the ribs?
