You finally did it, I have to turn off all notifications...
I hope you're satisfied that I no longer can have my email buried with comment notifications.
I hope you all are happy.
About two months ago, I turned off many of the finely granular notifications from Substack. Turns out that when you are gaining 100+ new subscribers a month, that generates a lot of email notifications, and whilst I LOVE the dopamine hit of a new subscriber opting in formally, it was noisy.
Then the flood of likes that would often be 100 or more in a day. Yeah, my Proton Mail account got bombarded. Sure, I could delete them, but it was messy, and if I skipped a few days, I would have to delete tons of notifications.
Ultimately, for the last couple of months, I had only the “comment left” as generating an email.
The last couple of weeks though, the inundation of my inbox made it clear that it was time to shut that off.
Yes, you greedy folks have begun having lengthy discussions (that I love) but that led to a wall of comment notifications. Thus, I have just one notification set, if someone is abusive, or an asshole in the comments, please flag that jackass so I can do a cleanup. But otherwise, I will just see the comments and the likes when I dive in.
I can’t imagine what a much more popular site does to handle the onslaught of notifications. They probably can afford some interns to fetch coffee and to deal with the endless stream of emails.
I get my own coffee, I edit my own posts (badly based on the number of typos I have to clean up) and I have to sort through the chaff of the emails.
But I like it like this.
Glad to help push you over the edge! Sounds like people like you and want to engage with your work. Even if you don’t see this, it’s a good problem to have! 🥳💖
You started it. 😂😂
