My days start with me brewing the coffee, emptying the dishwasher, petting my dogs, and then I sit down with my fresh cuppa, and then I hit Youtube.
I go searching a few things. A couple of streamers whose games I like to watch (watching masterful drivers on Forza is pretty zen for me), some political stuff1, and then music.
Youtube has figured me out pretty well.
Alas, lately I have been getting bombarded with (quite good) AI generated music and videos. So good that you have to pay attention to the details.
Like, does it look like bad lip syncing from the 1990s? Do the musicians hands make the wrong moves (and do they have more than 5 fingers?), and a lot of perfection. As in no slop in the playing2. The transitions are seamless. The beat never once falters3.
Sure, in the old days, producers and masterers would work hard to paper over these glitches that real live musicians make that makes them … well human.
Now, whenever I see something “new” that is perfect, I have doubts. So I have to really look at the video, because all AI generated video has really bad artifacts. I wrote about this here:
This gets me to this video by Moonlight Haze. One of the labels I follow teased this track from a coming album to be released. I clicked on it, and the perfection, the evenness of the mix, even the transitions are, for want of a better word perfect. So perfect, I suspected AI fuckery was afoot.
So I went hunting for glitches. And I couldn’t find any.
Moonlight Haze appears to be the real deal.
Production values are high, the vocals are epic, the musicianship is tight and well practiced. The song is catchy. Great stuff.
A lot less of this post election. Although I do watch a lot of Musk flushing his empire into the shitter with glee content.
Go watch any video of Jimmy Page live to see “slop”. The man may be a great, but he also got thoroughly shit-faced to overcome stage fright, and if you look/listen you can tell
Do a search for any live Outlaws performances of Green Grass and High Tides to see a lot of variability. But those boys sure can play.
Shouldn’t there be a watermark(?) on all AI that is generated?
We should have a right to know!
