I've had a mad crush on Steve Vai forever. (Never heard of the movie Crossroads, tho-nice)

Thanks, Geoff!

The movie is utterly regrettable, but that scene is the pinnacle of that effort.

There are two songs out there, Eugene’s bag of tricks, and Butler’s Bag. All that duel stuff the head cutting is Pagiannini caprice 24 (or is it 25), some wild ass violin shit that is just epic on guitar.

Malmsteen also weaves a lot of the Pagiannini into his shred.

Years after the movie, in an interview, Vai mentioned that it took him like 4 takes to fuck up that riff and “lose”, it is just something that he had to work at to screw it up.

And that is why I am a hack. I would take 50 tries to get one passably take.

Look up a live track by Jethro Tull, "Dambuster's March" that is a killer tune to add to your soundtrack for the demonstrations

Vai played both parts of the duel. And I suggest Paco de Lucia if you like flamenco

You mean this Paco: https://www.sweatyspice.com/p/music-friday-night-in-san-francisco

Yeah, he was a true master of the art.

Thanks for the comment!

Yes. I forgot that I liked that stack last year. I have that vinyl. A half-speed master recording. So this performance years earlier should sound familiar.

John Williams

The music of Barrios. My favorite album. You left out Christopher Parkening.. Julian Bream was also a lutenist. He would play both instruments in concert. Saw him several times. And of course, Segovia. The Master. Also saw him 3 or 4 times in San Francisco. All of them. Grew up listening to guitar. My father played. And then in mid-life, along came Yngwie, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, SRV, Albert King, BB King, Jeff Beck, Steve Morse, and on and on. Many more.

My apologies. Parkening is also a stellar player across the board.

Music is life!
