Ermahgerd, so many flashbacks from this post! My first custom-built (by a friend) rig was great, but it went through so many power supplies. One of my kids has gotten into building their own for gaming, and will also empathize with your current plight. Good luck with it!

Yeah, the 90's were a wild time. In a way it was much simpler then.

I am gravitating towards an AMD processor (my first since the last Athlon build) the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, a Gigabyte motherboard, a pair of fat NVMe SSD's, a ton of RAM, and an NZXT case (like the picture).

I remember buying my first 20 megabyte HD in the 80's that cost me about $800 by the time I added a controller card for it. Then the tipping point circa 1994 when I bought a 340 megabyte HD for about $340. Since then the prices have just rocketed downwards. Two 2TB NVMe SSD's will set me back about $220. InSaNe.

There is almost too much information out there these days. It was much easier to keep up in the 90's.
