I am a big fan of nature versus nurture. But you aren't born with ethics and values. Those need to be taught and these parents you describe are abject failures.
I’m not going to nominate myself as parent of the year, because I made plenty of mistakes, but I’ll just say that my youngest has a PhD in a neuroscience field with mad computer skills. They’re helping children with cognitive disabilities. Eldest has dual degrees in biological and environmental sciences. They’re helping provide education, data for species recovery after an event and surveys for state/federal agencies. I couldn’t be prouder.
Good job there Kay-El. While neither of my boys are as highly “edumacated” both are successful in their fields using IT that they both grew up on and then either went to school for certification or worked for the kind of company that valued education enough to help pay for enriching their field. One is helping me out now while the other is helping his half-sister with her two year old. They all turned out to be good, honest to a fault men in spite of their parents screwing up our marriage. I’ll have to credit my ex’s second wife as she caught the brunt of helping raise son #2 as well as having her own daughter and going to nursing school. Turns out, she and I are a lot alike. Grandparents pitched in too and had there been a hint of anything nefarious going on, they knew we’d come down on them like stink on shit!
Love your story SPW, good to read! Yeah, my marriage was doomed when my kids were still quite young, but they came out on the other side good people. It wasn’t easy for me nor them but we made it work.
Something something bad genes….

Wait, neither of them are sociopathic EA doouche nozzles who cried a whole bunch to give them money to cozy up to celebrities, and to name arenas?
I am shocked!
(You seem to have done well!)
In spite of me and because of me? Lol
