In a meeting yesterday, I made a Casablanca reference, and the three others on the call hadn’t ever seen it.
I can’t relate the tale of what brought it up, but I made a reference to the scene where the French Police officer is standing in Rick’s and utters the phrase “I am shocked there is gambling happening here” and right after a croupier hands him his “winnings”.
It is an iconic scene, and I was completely shocked that none of my peers in that call had even seen Casablanca.
What is this world coming to? Good thing I didn't make a “Rosebud” reference…
I feel for you, truly. I'm older than you, and it's disheartening to see so many old quotations—that have been memes longer than the term has existed—not be recognized.
The only thing missing from your post is a "Get off my lawn!"
