Boston is a terrific band. They were so overplayed in southern Ohio that I wasn't able to listen to anything by them until the early 2000s.

I never got into their follow-on work. It just felt almost clinical, and lacked soul. I read that he played most of the parts of the original album, and had to assemble a band to "sign" and they gelled nicely.

Tom has two 1959 Gibson Les Paul gold top guitars. Apparently he bought one of them second hand in the early 70's, and he figured that he needed a second one "just in case" so he found one at a pawn shop pretty reasonable.

Today, original '59 Gold Tops are worth like $40K or more (I have played one, and it is not that good)

So they're worth that much because there are so few around today?

Partially. Although the Gibson custom shop will build you one that you wouldn't be able to tel wasn't the real deal for about $5K.

More that scarcity, exclusivity, and boomers with more money than sense prices up these "vintage" instruments.

Fact is, the modern age with CNC machining, improved materials, and there are lots of ~ $500 guitars that are absolutely amazing. The big manufacturers, resting on their laurels are still getting good money, but there has never been a better time to learn to play.
