Music: Karmen Klinc
With special guest on guitar, this cover of the Whitesnake classic, Still of the Night reminds me of when the original album came out. Karmen gives Coverdale a run for the money
The year is 1987. I am still taking guitar lessons from Vern, a young man I met from my voyages on the BBS scene1.
Whitesnake the band had been around for a while, but it had yet to reach my consciousness.
That changed when the band released their 7th album, the eponymous “Whitesnake”. The first single from the album hit the airwaves, and it was a rip-snorter, “Still of the Night”, a song that just reaches into your chest cavity and juices your heart directly with 10cc’s of pure adrenaline.
David Coverdale’s vocals are searing, raw, and passionate. John Sykes’ guitar work was gritty, raucous and in your face. The main riff was catchy.
Great stuff indeed.
Fast forward 38 years, and I spy on my Youtube feed a cover of this iconic song from my misspent youth by two women, Karmen Klinc on vocals with a guest appearance by femme guitarist Darya Tyusheva, and you have something that I was gonna click on.
Hoo-boy, was that the right answer. Karmen has the range to spare, delivering on the full dynamic range that Coverdale was famous for in his prime (to be fair, he’s still pretty damn good), and Darya fucking NAILS the guitar parts.
It is a beautiful thing to listen to a faithful cover of a song that emotes so hard for you. I was transported back to that time in 1987 when I rushed out to buy this CD, and it delivered the same thrill to my ears.
Do yourself a treat, grab some headphones, click on the video below, and lose yourself in the past made present.
Just delightful!
I really need to write about that era of my life running a pirate Atari BBS in the 1980s
Thanks for that Geoff. Took me back to college. I saw Whitesnake about 10 years ago in my hometown. Coverdale walks out and says “Hello Rogers Fucking Arkansas!” My best friend looks at me and says “Never thought I’d hear David Fucking Coverdale say Rogers Arkansas”.
Awesome. Getting out Whitesnake cd to compare.
