Music: Telegraph Road - redux
When a great studio track also delivers the goods live, you know it is a classic for the ages. Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits delivers in spades.
In the afterglow of the dumpster fire that was the election, I have sorta backed away from posting. No, not entirely, but really after the gut punch of Trump’s victory (and those who will claim it was close, can it, he fucking swept the swing states, for fuck’s sake).
But as I have retuned my Youtube algorithm, I have begun getting more music into my feed, and I have watched (and shared) many fine videos.
This morning, I got a live recording of Dire Straits from 2015, recorded in Sevilla Spain, it is Telegraph Road. I wrote about it earlier this year:
That was the album version, and every word I wrote was spot on.
But today’s video is amazing. Mark starts with the resonator guitar, and about 5 minutes in, switches to his Suhr, and he just fucking rips it. Tasteful, his playing coupled with his distinctive tone is just poetry.
Not much flash, just an epic tune, with a band that just delivers gold.
This will be 13 minutes well spent; pinky swear!
I’m embarrassed to admit that’s the first time I’ve ever heard that song, and I’ve clearly missed out on something great.
Keep the guitar posts coming; I have been completely ignoring all my political stuff, and your music posts give me a reason to continue checking Substack.
My favorite Dire Straits album is Alchemy from 1983, and my favorite track on it is Romeo and Juliet. The mandolin entrance on it makes me bawl my eyes out every time
