Ronnie James Dio was a titan. He stepped in as the vocals for Black Sabbath when Ozzy departed to go solo, and he was an early vocal presence for Rainbow, where his style blended very well with Richie Blackmore's neogothic riffs.
From the Holy Diver album, I prefer the song "Invisible". Killer riff, and amazing guitar wizardry from Vivien Campbell.
From the Sabbath era, check out "Heaven and Hell", and the iconic "Man on the Silver Mountain" is the best of his Rainbow era.

Oh, and pre-metal for him, he had a band called Elf that was straight rock and roll. Give it a listen too, it might satisfy the early 70's vibe!
