I had to laugh, because I have a similar (though not as critical data) story. When I realized what I had deleted, I quickly went to find out if there was a backup, and there was. Crisis averted. I was waaaaaay more careful after that!
In the mid 70's the company I worked for went online using a proprietary Unix program on IBM terminals using token ring. We finally dumped that token ring shit in the 90's. 20ish years of almost daily 'token ring error' messages is hard to forget.

Indeed. The IT team was Stone Age (security, access control, and the like), but they did have religion about tape backups
