The Larry Carlton solo you played brought to mind some of the riffs in Jeff Beck’s Freeway Jam on his Blow By Blow album (YMMV). Indeed, the engineers really buried his guitar part, but that seems to be fairly uniform in the "Adult Contemporary" genre. Alas, many of those artists are damn fine musicians, you just wouldn't know it from what gets airplay.

It's just pop music, not particularly creative or original. Sounds like lots of other stuff released in the late 70s.
