I still like the way Sub Stack is structured but I have been wonderings why there has been an uptick in negativity whereas the platform has been largely positives. I hope this isn't a sad portent of things to come.
Yeah, I've been thinking about this a fair bit recently. I started my little missive here for the joy of listening to, writing about, and sharing music with others. For me, to monetize it would take a lot of the pleasure out of it, so that ain't gonna happen. And I like what Substack offers even for free riders like us, especially notifications. Does Buttowndown not offer those possibilities, or is there no way for commenters to be notified when they get a reply?
So for now, I've decided to stay here, in part because I don't want to cede ground to them. I've done enough online modding to not be afraid to wield my banhammer or other tools to keep them from polluting my area. It is disappointing that so many really big letters here are keeping their heads firmly in the sand. (Bulwark's big "issue" for both dailies was former Harvard President Dr. Gay's alleged plagiarism. Supporting evidence for that phrasing: https://apnews.com/article/harvard-president-plagiarism-claudine-gay-3b048da1f2ee17b5edec3680b5828e8f )
Buttondown doesn't have the social "wrapper" that helps audience growth. Nor do they offer commenting and other community niceties, but I would bet my bottom dollar that there will be a lot of ecosystem growth, and other add ons to help replace what Substack offers.
Substack's model isn't that difficult, and they do not own the payment side (that is Stripe) so once there is a place for these people to go to they will be able to lift and shift their paid subscribers without any disruption. That is what I experienced with The Sword and the Sandwich. It just "works"
I read the bullshit in the Bulwark about the resignation of Dr. Gay of Harvard, it was weak tea, and it is disappointing.
And then the WaPo has a fucking OpEd by Roy Texiera. Christ, I need to cancel that sub.

I have had to ban several people in the last few days. It is getting really bad, and I don't even post much politics stuff.

Oh, and that image? Yeah it is bullshit.
