Thanks for this post. Every few months, I get an email that my neighbors have invited me to NextDoor, and I’m really missing out on a lot by not joining. I really didn’t know much about the platform, but decided I didn’t need another time waster. Now I know I’ve made the right decisions!

I too was on NextDoor for a very short time after our neighborhood by a gang from the neighboring city who were stealing mail out of mailboxes. But right away I noticed it was filled with frenzied comments about “suspicious” people the writers didn’t know walking down their street. It is full of nasty rich Karens with nothing better to do but look for someone to hate.

I left Nextdoor a while ago - they still keep sending emails - I am constantly u subscribing and I will until it is gone. Ours has mostly turned into lost, Found and rehoming animals and that is as depressing as the ICE raids. Here I AZ it is a little quieter for NOW but that I’m sure will change.

I can’t believe how much HATRED goes along with today’s So called Christian beliefs.

Absolutely agree! I ditched it a long time ago. My husband is on it but he has a higher tolerance for trolls and has banded together with a couple of other folks who take joy in trolling the racists. I love they can tolerate the stench in there to call them out and glad someone is doing it but it’s not for me.

I quit Nextdoor in Charlotte for those same reasons. I decided to try it again when we moved back to California, thinking it might be better here. Nope.

Next Door has always been a dumpster fire. I left years ago too. I can only imagine the disgusting comments on posts about ICE raids

I used to be on ND. One time I posted pictures of contrails I had photographed. Local USAF base had acquired a large fleet of fighter jets. They would be practicing their flights. The contrails were amazing and awesome. The number of conspiracy nuts and crazies was just mind-blowing. They called them chemtrails and ranted on & on that the pilots were trying to poison America. And people demanding freebies of furniture food, services etc just was disgusting. Even worse were the people who allowed their pets to roam and then cried over and over when they didn't return home. Not only a wasteland but also a waste of time.

Next Door is one of the circles of Dante’s Hell. What a waste of a platform on racist jerks. There’s a guy knocking on doors asking if we want tree service…

ND is a garbage pit, filled with bigots, dumb asses and other assorted vermin. I lasted about 6 months when I moved to my new house. I do miss notifications from people who are looking for a lost pet, but I have a friend who lets me know.

Damn. In Shelby County, Missouri, nosey farmers keep everyone informed. Good thing I'm not there very often. 😂

Social Media has indeed brought out the worst in people. Keyboard warriors who feel brave to be assholes behind their screens. I always say the human species is still a primitive one. :(

My grandmother in Miller county loved party-line telephones. 90% of farm gossip was received that way.

I remember that! My grandparents had a crank phone on the wall and got the operator who would connect them! Thanks for that memory Doc!

“…they drive between their work sites at or below the speed limit because they have well used trucks”

Probably somewhat more averse to running over pets and children than a lot of suburb drivers as well.

I got rid of ND a while ago. For a while I had a Ring doorbell, which connects you to all your neighbors who also have Ring doorbells. It was no better than ND. Since there is (or was) a population of coyotes living nearby, occasionally someone would post a warning if they saw a coyote, in case people were out for an early-morning walk or had pets outside. One day I saw a coyote running down the street, so I posted a heads up. Instantly, I got a snarky response: “Do you get an award for sighting one?”

I responded, “Do YOU get a special big-boy sticker for being a putz?”

Next neighbor: “Coyotes deserve to eat, too.”

Me: “No one said they don’t deserve to eat. Since people around here let their cats wander around outside, they might want to call them in so the coyotes don’t eat them.”

3rd neighbor: “It’s really not that deep…”

Me: “Why are you bringing up your gene pool?”

We got rid of Ring and went to ADT, now that we know who lives nearby.

I recently discovered that with Ring so I just dumped my account and use it as a regular doorbell.

I didn’t know you could do that. You lose the camera, right?

Yep, but I doubt anyone can tell unless they walk through my fence.

That is almost exactly what I experienced a decade or so ago.

The clincher was the insensitivity of the revelers on the 4th, whenever anyone commented about how the near war-zone level of explosive devices was causing their dogs or other pets trauma (it literally is wall to wall fireworks with one joker a couple blocks over firing 6" and 8" professional grade mortars from their street, with enough concussion power to set off all car alarms for about 3 blocks in each direction. Insane!) they would just say (literally) "Suck it libtard, this is what FrEeDoM is all about"

No, people are just as asshole-ish, self-centered even when they are not remote and anonymous.

To be fair, LinkedIn ain't much better these days too.

There are studies that suggest that platforms like this give people cover to be their absolute worst selves.
