The Girl from Ipanema: Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto
Even if I can't play this groove, I still enjoy the heck out of it.
In the mid 1980’s, as I was learning guitar, I started hunting for new songs/music/sounds I wanted to be influenced by. One of these tangents was Jazz, and the players that captured my ears were players like Pat Metheny, Joe Pass, and Stanley Jordan. But from there, I got into a bit of bossa nova, and that is a music genre I can enjoy, but — like Bluegrass — I had no way of bringing that rhythm into my repertoire.
Still, I loved listening to it.
The exemplar from this genre is The Girl from Ipanema. I must have a dozen different versions of this in my collection, and it brings a smile to my face every time I hear the intro to this.
Naturally, my recent delves into the jazz and Gypsy side of Youtube vids, this next one was queued up by the algorithm gods.
This delightful performance combines the ethereal vocal stylings of Astrid Gilberto (note to self: look for recordings from her) and the incomparable Stan Getz.
‘nuff said, do listen, and let me know what you think.
Like when Bohemian Rhapsody rolls up, when The Girl from Ipanema is queued up, I shut up and listen to it in its entirety.
I hope you agree that this is amazing.
Astrud is wonderful! I started listening to her back in the early 1990’s when a local jazz station threw her back into serious rotation. I used to have this awesome Verge CD that Apple, Spotify nor YouTube has in their catalog. Anyway, I usually throw this one on when I’m baking or doing other shit around the house. It’s got her hits and a bunch more and is just so groovy! :-)

Love this song for so many reasons! And to be @ Ipanema, closing your eyes - and envisioning her walking by without a care - brings a whole new meaning to the lyrics. Definitely a classic..!
