Astrud is wonderful! I started listening to her back in the early 1990βs when a local jazz station threw her back into serious rotation. I used to have this awesome Verge CD that Apple, Spotify nor YouTube has in their catalog. Anyway, I usually throw this one on when Iβm baking or doing other shit around the house. Itβs got her hits and a bunch more and is just so groovy! :-)
Love this song for so many reasons! And to be @ Ipanema, closing your eyes - and envisioning her walking by without a care - brings a whole new meaning to the lyrics. Definitely a classic..!
I think I knew Bossa Nova before I ever knew the Beatles (and I saw the Beatles live on the Ed Sullivan Show). I always stop and listen to Girl from Ipanema. I have the vinyl. And I postedthis about it last December on the occassion of Astrud's death.
You can almost smell the cigarettes in long ivory holders, women in furs and boas, with costume jewelry, and men wearing stylish suits with ties and perfectly coifed hair and neatly trimmed facial hair if you close your eyes while listening to this.
