Writers I like: Talia Lavin
My Fridays are never complete without the Sandwich post.
A long time ago, I followed Talia Lavin on Twitter. I don’t recall why, but she caught my eye, and she has provided a mix of serious and fun things over the years.
Last year I saw that she was on Substack and I signed up (and paid). She writes long form on Christian Discipline, on antisemitism, and other hard hitting topics.

But every Friday, she posts about sandwiches. Working her way through the list of best sandwiches, there are some gems. Today was the “Hamdog1” and it is just fucking gold.
The post is great, but it reminds me of a site that was active in the early aughts called “this is why you’re fat”, where people submit pictures of just atrocious dietary items. Things like the “White Castle Casserole” - a 9x13 pan with White Castle sliders smothered in brown gravy, or the French Toast Stonehenge, a rendition of the stones of Stonehenge with maple syrup dripping over them.
