I hope the progressives are happy with themselves
Trump is planning on pressuring the resettlement of the Palestinians to neighboring Arab states. I presume this is to clear the strip for developers like Kushner to sweep in and build luxe condos.
I recall a ton of angst from Muslim communities, particularly in Michigan about the Biden Administration’s support for Israel. Chants of “Genocide Joe” were rather frequent.
Additionally, much of the media I was consuming was petulant young progressives whinging about the plight of the Palestinians, and the (admittedly horrendous) violence as the IDF battled with Hamas.
And I will agree that the IDF was ham handed, and overbearing. That said, what Hamas did on October 7th, 2023 was beyond egregious, and their actions placed the Palestinian citizenry in the firing line, knowing that this would stoke outrage in the international community.
That enabled the Trumpian campaign to tailor absolute bullshit campaign rhetoric that made Trump sound sympathetic to these young progressives.
Looking at the returns, the under 30 vote was far more leaning to Trump than it should have been, as well as Muslim majority districts fell in line and broadly voted for Trump.
A blind chipmunk could have predicted what is going to happen now.
That was then, this is now …
In today’s Washington Post1, there is an article: “Trump says to ‘clean out’ Gaza, urges Arab countries to take more refugees” (gifted link) that lays out Trump’s plan to just sweep the Palestinians out of Gaza and to be resettled in Egypt or Jordan.
Anybody with half a brain cell would have predicted this. Trump made “promises” to the Arab and Muslim communities and got them to pull the lever for Trump/Vance, and now he is shitting all over them. And they seem SHOCKED.
It is not like this isn't what that obese motherfucker Trump ALWAYS does.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Saturday, Trump said he spoke with King Abdullah II of Jordan — whose country has historically taken in millions of Palestinian refugees — about the idea, which Abdullah and other Arab leaders have previously rejected.
“I said to him, I’d love you to take on more, because I’m looking at the whole Gaza Strip right now, and it’s a mess,” Trump said. “I’d like him to take people. I’d like Egypt to take people.”
“You’re talking about probably a million and a half people, and we just clean out that whole thing” he said.
This is the most fucking predictable thing EVER.
I did dip my toe in a few times to predict that this would be the net result, and I was pooh-poohed. Hell, I was attacked, berated by the young college liberals.
People like The Young Turks (and Ana Kasparian in particular) were particularly egregious. But don’t worry you Progressives, they’ve made the short hop to the far Right MAGA-dom from their prior far-left progressive perch.
Alas, this was predictable, and the obvious conclusion of their hissy fit.
But Biden was so fucking awful that you just had to vote for Trump.
Human rights groups and the Biden administration have opposed a forcible displacement of Palestinians from Gaza or the occupied West Bank. Israel’s Arab neighbors also oppose it and have said they fear that Israel intends to force Palestinians out in order to weaken their case for independent Palestinian statehood. After Hamas attacked on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and taking 250 hostages, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu launched a counterattack that has forced nearly 2 million Gazans from their homes and left much of the Gaza Strip in ruins, drawing accusations from critics that Israel was seeking the deliberate removal of Palestinians from Gaza.
Oh well, you get what you voted for2.
Lather, rinse, repeat.
Yeah, I cancelled the post. But my wife insisted on reactivating. Merde.
I am truly sad for what is and has happened to the Palestinians in Gaza. They are pawns in the struggle between the Islamic and Jewish struggle.
But I am not sure that there is a solution to this problem.
But wait! Didn't Nepo-Baby Kushner solve the Middle East during the last Trump ‘administration?!’ 🤦🏻♂️
There was a solution to the problem, Geoff. And it was agreed not only between political leaders, but with practical plans and agreement between government departments in Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, and Syria.
With the Saudis and Emirates putting their tuppence in as well.
There was a practical, realistic, and achievable peace agreement - at all levels - and I was extremely proud to have played a back stage role in helping facilitate it, as my boss (who was also my Dad) chaired the second-level talks - which went on for nearly a year. The only reason I wasn't in Cairo with him is that the ultra orthodox delegates did not want a woman in the room...
Then the ultra-nationalists in Israel - you know, the ones propping up Netanyahu - got real panicky and assassinated Yitzhak Rabin, and that was the end of it.
Peace was so close you could have reached out and touched it...
