Fabulous! šŸ‘šŸ‘šŸ‘ I loved the live at Carnegie Hall concert Joe did, too. I enjoy him.

Awesome! Thx! My husband listens to a fair amount of Bonamassa, but I’d not heard of Eric Gales before.

First off ,as always , thank you for sharing with us. I really appreciate your efforts to educate us especially with regard to ā€œnewā€ or ā€œunder the radar ā€œtalented musicians.

However, My feelings towards Mr. Bonnamassa almost kept me from opening your letter this afternoon. Finding out about Eric Gales is actually what prompted me to open up.

In reading your opening paragraph in which you express some caveats to adoration of Mr B brought me to listening. Thanks you for that.

For me Joe has no soul. Flashy picking yes but for me at least he has no soul. Maybe soul is the wrong word. His music simply does not touch my heart.

Thanks for the comment. I also struggle with Joe for many of the reasons that you cite. He's a great player with a ton of chops, but he comes off as a traveler between genre's and not really defining his own style.

I do like is work with Beth Hart, and he does have some bona fide legends who will stand on stage with him (like Eric Gale here), but unlike Gary Moore, who played with a lot of the blues greats, including Albert King, BB King, and Buddy Guy among many others, Joe seems to be all about "joe"

I admire the hell out of Joe. He’s not only a fine player, he did it on his own terms without becoming part of the rockstar elite. His hustle, drive and dedication to his art have always impressed me. I particularly like his choice of collaborators highlighting his musical roots, e.g.

My one complaint is how much he hustles what he sells. I finally unsubbed from his mailing list (and shockingly, he really did stop sending me email) because it was a near daily pitching of specials on his music (good, I bought a ton), and tchotchkes like pins, socks and the like. The man is a marketing machine!

Still, he's got the chops, and he knows how to leverage that.

Yeah, I didn’t last long on his mailing list either. But if you want to make it on your own terms, especially online, hustle seems to help. Depends on how you define success, I guess.

Oh yeah, the days of getting signed and rolling in the royalties are long over. It is the merch and touring, as well as much direct to listener sales you can do of your music (the majors still rape artists over residuals from traditional album sales what ever is left of that) and if you can’t get people to invest beyond their Spotify sub, you might as well stand in line at a soup kitchen.

The music industry is really broken.
