This is for the dudes in audience. The dudettes can tune out.
Look, we need to have a conversation about appropriate behavior. I understand the desire to ogle beautiful women. Hell, I sometimes take a second glance when I see someone on the street. Am I proud of that? Disappointed? Nah, but it is being human.
However, you really need to keep it to a glance, and move on.
But then there is social media, where you can comment and really show how much of a fuckwad you really are.
Because I have watched videos by talented women guitar players1, the Youtube algorithm keeps surfacing other women who play guitar into my feed. And I do click on many of them (further reinforcing the algorithm) and not surprisingly, there are some truly amazing players2.
But then I look at the comments, and they are littered with shit like this:
I can assure you that she fucking NAILED that outro solo, it was perfection. And her emotional interpretation is just spot on. But look at those comments.
This is another one. Her playing is very blues centric, and she has posted some fantastic covers of blues greats like Stevie Ray Vaughn. And she nails them.
Of course, MimiSounds has almost a million subscribers, and that is certainly largely due to her “thirsty” vids and shorts. Clearly she knows the audience, and works it. With that many subs, she likely makes a fairly comfortable living from her revenue share with YT.
Back to my dudes. Look, I glance at thirst traps, and even enjoy them at times. But please, think hard before you feel compelled to comment lewdly.
And finally, if you are ever tempted to use terms like “milkers” to refer to breasts, really you should fucking cut off your goddamn fingers to prevent you from ever typing that.
Be better.
I seek out and support them because a) I am a strong believer that playing guitar is not something that men are inherently better, just overrepresented, and b) I truly believe they bring a different perspective to music that is refreshing.
One of the first that I followed, long pre-social media and internet, is Jennifer Batten. She played on tour with Michael Jackson, and if you look her up, she is fucking AMAZEBALLS, the equal of many of the iconic players from the 1980s. You will not be disappointed.
Just read the top 250 guitarists of all time by Rolling Stond- all types of music - almost as many females as males - bravo Rolling Stone!
Exactly. It's depressing watching someone showing genuinely real talent and proud of it, only to see nothing but the worst of the bros commenting and being utterly deplorable.
There used to be a conduct called "Being a gentleman" in social situations. There was etiquette involved in interactions. Social media has just given the worst an excuse to blow right through that and cater to their own ids.
