September 26, 2026 - Week in Review
Only one post the week from September 19 - 26.
Really quiet week at Chez Sweaty. Work has been intense, and frankly I have hit a wall in my writing.
Frankly, I am wondering if I should continue to post.
Anyhow, this week I only published once when I read the comments on a picture going viral on the socials.
Thursday, September 24: Perhaps you saw that picture of a sign at a restaurant that breaks down the costs of a meal, and there is a line for the tip, about $40 bucks on a $165 check. If you saw one of these and clicked into the comments, hooboy was there a lot of shitty takes.
I worked my way through college in the kitchen (the 1980's) so I am well aware of the economics of the food service industry, and the fucked up nature of the tipped employee conundrums (fun fact: in the 1980's probably 3/4 of patrons paid with cash, so a LOT of the tips were untaxed and un (or under) reported.)
What those poseurs in the comments don't realize is that on the $165 check, even if the bill is paid with cash, the server will be allocated 18% (I think) of that as tips, and expected to pay taxes on that.
Repeat after me: Sure, tipping sucks, but by stiffing your server, you are really screwing them.
And, like most fucked up things in society, you can trace it back to racism and slavery.
